What is Faux Finish?

What is Faux Finish?

One of the fastest growing trends in decoration, Faux Finish is the creation of elegant hand- crafted and personalized translucent paint finishes. Faux Finish provides a warmth, depth, permanence, and movement unmatched by other paint or wallpaper applications. After decades of "less is more " in decoration, today's consumers crave the sense of individualized elegant detail which Faux Finish offers.

It's name evolving from the French "to fool" or "make believe," Faux Finish's decorative painting utilizes classical techniques in order to provide a variety of finished surfaces such as glazing, sponging, color washing, and marbling.

Advantages of a Faux Finish

Faux Finishes can be applied to almost all surfaces, including dry wall, sheet rock, plastering, wood, metal, fabric, glass, and ceramic, remembering that the preparation and priming of the surface will vary from one material to another. Longer lasting than wallpaper, Faux Finish also provides the advantage of practicality. Because it does not have seams, it will not peal off under adverse environmental effects such as humidity. And too, Faux Finish becomes more beautiful with age. If ever required, touch ups and repairs are accomplished very easily. Faux Finish can be topcoated with polyurethane in matte, satin, or semi-gloss finishes. Special applications can be applied for commerecial faux projects to extend the life of a finish exposed to public use.

Faux Finish can hide the imperfections of the any surface. Surface condition will help us to decide which technique and topcoat would be the best Faux Finish for your surface. In rough old walls, the rag rolling technique and matt finish topcoat will help us to hide any imperfection. While dragging (strie), a glossy topcoat is desired for smooth surface for a better result.

Faux Finish can change the size of any area, (remember Faux Finish is to make believe or to fool someone). With Faux Finish, you can make a smaller area appear larger, by using lighter colors and a soft technique. It can also make a large area appear smaller by using dark colors and a dramatic technique. You may also want to bring the ceiling down or you may push it up.
